Caramelized Onions

Sweet and tender browned onions to use on other foods.


4 Tbsps. Butter, salted, or see Notes
1&1/2 lbs. Onions


Melt the Butter in a large skillet over the medium low  heat until it stops foaming.  See note if using unsalted butter.

Meanwhile, cut off the stem end of the Onions then peel.  Cut each onion in half from root to stem.  Laying cut side down, slice into 1/4" or wider slices, discarding the root ends..

Add the cut onions to the skillet.  Increase the heat to medium and stir every 5 minutes.

As they start to brown, reduce the heat to medium low and stir every 3 minutes, even more frequently the darker they get,  until they reach your desired color and tenderness, about 30-40 minutes of cooking.


If you use unsalted butter, add 1/4 teaspoon of Kosher Salt or 1/8 teaspoon of Table Salt.

Serving Suggestions:

I like these atop a burger or pizza or in an omelet, etc.  Other options are too numerous to list.  I've never tried serving them as a vegetable, but I don't know why you couldn't as long as you made plenty.
