Rice Krispies® Marshmallow Treats

An old favorite, quite possibly the first recipe I ever made.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup Butter, unsalted
10 ozs. Marshmallows, fresh
5 cups Rice Krispies®

Directions:

Lightly grease a 13"x9"x2" pan with butter, but not from the 1/4 cup of Butter listed above.

Melt the 1/4 cup of Butter in a 3 quart or larger saucepan over low heat.  Add Marshmallows and stir until completely melted.  Cook over low heat 3 minutes longer, stirring constantly.  Remove from heat.

Add Rice Krispies cereal.  Stir until well coated.

Using a buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly into the buttered pan.  Cut into 2" squares when cooled.

Notes:

Best results are obtained when using fresh marshmallows.

To make thicker squares, use a 9"x9"x2" inch pan.

Variations:

I've added one cup of mini-chocolate chips when adding the cereal for a Chocolate Chip Rice Krispies Marshmallow Treats variation.

The Cocoa Krispies® box suggested substituting 6 cups of Cocoa Krispies® for the 5 cups of Rice Krispies®.  I have no idea why you'd use a cup more, but I've done it and it works.  This changes the nutritional information as follows: 94 Calories; 2g Fat (21.0% calories from fat); 1g Protein; 19g Carbohydrate; trace Dietary Fiber; 5mg Cholesterol; 75mg Sodium.  Exchanges: 1/2 Fat; 1/2 Other Carbohydrates.
